The Illinois Watch Company initially produced the pocket watch with the Burlington Watch Company trade name for the Babson Bros. Company in Chicago. The piece boasts a remarkable white dial with stylish black hour numerals and detailed black and red minute numerals. You can also see the dial’s eye-catching blued-steel spade and whip watch hands and a helpful subdial. We encased this antique within our protective and fashionable Gunmetal Titanium case, and we equipped it with a nickel-plated crown. Our Gunmetal Titanium case features a transparent rear side, revealing the watch’s 275-grade open-face movement with a Going barrel, False bridge, and double roller safety action. You can also see the movement’s stunning gold-plated gears and 21 sumptuous jewels throughout its large bridge plate. We completed the product with our comfortable and fashionable Cordovan Black leather watch strap, perfectly complementing the dial and case.
The Illinois Watch Company originally manufactured this antique watch in Springfield, Illinois, in 1921 — the same year that President Warren G. Harding officiated the first ceremony honoring the unknown soldiers who passed away in World War I. On Memorial Day of 1921, an unknown American serviceman was exhumed from a French cemetery. The USS Olympia brought the body back to the United States, and he lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda within the United States Capitol. On Armistice Day — now called Veteran’s Day in the United States — the unknown soldier was buried in the plaza of Memorial Amphitheater. In addition to being recognized for his service to the United States during World War I, the unknown serviceman was awarded the the British Victoria Cross, the French Legion of Honour, Médaille Militaire, Croix de Guerre, the Polish Virtuti Militari, the Romanian Virtutea Militara, the Italian Gold Medal for Bravery, and the Czechoslovakian War Cross.
